Cadet Matthew Self
Cadet of the Year For 2011

14 year old Matthew Self has been in the Sea Cadet program since October 2009. He was inspired to join the Sea Cadets by some of his father's stories of when he served in the Navy on board the USS Deyo. He has recently been promoted to Petty Officer 3rd Class and finished his Petty Officer 2nd Class material and awaiting time to take the test.

 

He completed his Recruit Training in January 2010 at the Mary Help Christian Center in Tampa, Florida where he received his Expert Marksmanship ribbon. He attended Seabee Training July 2010 where he was interview by their local newspaper and made their front page. He also attended POLA (Petty Officer Leadership Academy) January 2011 and gained a lot of insight and great leadership skills. He spent a week at the local Navy Recruiting office and frequently visits to say hello and check to make sure they still have Yorktown Division flyers. He was thrilled to join them during their PT in the mornings. He also hold the title JR SUPPLY OFFICER and spends countless hours in the supply locker making sure it is squared away and distributing uniforms to new cadets and officers. He is responsible for his own uniform and strives for it to be the best it can be. He has been singled out by numerous instructors and training officers during inspections on how sharp his uniform is presented.

 

He is also the main recruiting cadet for our unit. Because he is homeschooled he has made numerous appearances at different middle schools and a few of the events that were being held on board the USS Yorktown during school hours while other cadets werent available. He also recruited his mother, father, and both brothers to be part of our unit. Matthew serves as a rifleman on our colorguard team and has excelled in all aspects of the Sea Cadet Corps. He strives to be the best he can be,helping others when they need it. Matthew has several past times. First and foremost is Sea Cadet trainings.

He loves BMX racing. He raced BMX for 7 years. His family traveled all over the southeast racing bicycles. It was a family sport. He placed 6th at the Grand Nationals and 7th in the Regional finals in 2008 . He also likes to play his guitar. He received his first guitar when he was 10 and has lots of natural talent. He plays by ear. He has taught himself a lot of different kinds of music by sitting and watching videos on the computer. His pride and joy is his Epiphone Les Paul he received 2 years ago for Chirstmas. He enjoys, paintball, cooking, riding motorcross bikes and spending time with family and friends, especially his brothers. They have coached him on every step of the way to excel at his program. He also likes hunting, going to football games with friends,and Sea Cadet trainings missions. His goal in life is to attend the Naval Academy in Annapolis,MD and join the Navy as an Officer. His second choice is join the Marine Corps and go to College through the Marines education program. With the help of trainings provided by the Sea Cadet Corps he will excell at whatever he strives to become.
